Love at First Sight
Nkwichi, meaning “the sand that squeaks”, is a lost hideaway on the northern shores of Lake Niassa (Lake Malawi). 5 chalets, hand-built using local materials, mingle with the miombo woodland which stretches from the vast Manda Wilderness Conservation Area all the way down to white sand washed by crystal-clear water.
Romance
Every chalet has a giant bathtub built into the rocks, so you can both lay back, ensconced in bubbles, surrounded by candlelight, sip your wine and stare up at the stars through the trees. Our famous Star Bed is a highlight you will never forget. Have sundowners on the beach or the lookout point, followed by dinner and then be left alone with the Milky Way, falling asleep to the whoosh of shooting stars and waking up as the sun peeks over the nearby hills, to stretch and listen to the fish eagle calling as it swoops over the lake in front of you.
Your Stay
Chalets are more than generous in size and house giant beds with gleaming tree-trunk mosquito-net posts, living areas, private toilets and outdoor bathrooms where you are surrounded by tangled greenery and can laze back in a huge bubble bath sculpted into primordial rock. Eat dinner wherever takes your fancy that day – on the beach, on your veranda or on a deck overlooking the lake under giant trees. The beach bar is where everybody gathers for sundowners around the bonfire, or to pick up some snorkelling gear and a kayak to explore the waters of the lake, filled with millions of colourful fish – or set off back through the forest to look for pangolins and zebras. A night in our envy-inducing Star Bed is not to be missed – on a lookout point or on the beach – and it’s not just for honeymooners… Nkwichi is for everybody, all the time – bring the whole family!
What to Do
Reconnect, take a walk in untouched riverine forest, along mountainous paths with spectacular views across teh lake, visit a giant baobab tree - over 1000 years old - and have a picnic under its ancient branches. Snorkel in the lake with colourful cichlid fish. Take a kayak and explore beaches and coves along uninhabited coastline. Visit one of our sustainable projects. Learn how to SUP (stand up paddle board), go for a sunset sail on a dhow or just laze on the beach, taking in the view over one of the largest lakes in the world.

Nkwichi supports a local farming project, so we use fresh local ingredients to grace your plate. Enjoy the most delicious freshwater fish you have ever tasted - chambo and kampango being the favourites. You can dine wherever you wish...
