Love at First Sight
Our 70 individually crafted guestrooms and suites offer one of the most unique accommodations in the city - aesthetically rich in luxury yet infused with the inimitable LaLiT style and sensibility. The luxury hotel rooms & suites are located on three levels with room categories ranging from Cosy Classrooms to the exquisite The LaLiT Legacy Suite. All guestrooms differ in design and layout, some of which boast of 30-feet high ceilings. Each room presents itself with outstanding volumes of comfort and relaxation, ensuring the most unforgettable hospitality experience in London.
Your Stay
It was St Olave’s grammar establishment for boys from 1835 to 1968. The Tudor-inspired red-brick building still has the sunny, supercilious air of an English school for the privileged: a prim, foliage-lined quadrangle, insolent black gates with fleur-de-lys finials, and stone dressings that have an appealing baronial decrepitness, grey and slightly mould-spattered with age. But inside glitters like an Indian palace, with flame-tickled tea lamps, illuminated screens, and gold-threaded tapestries of the tree of life.
Many used to be classrooms and have soaring ceilings and original beams. All are bombastically decorated with silver and burnt-orange satins and velvets; copper-threaded Indian textiles hang on the walls, encased in sandpaper-rough frames. Most fetching of all are the huge headboards stitched with peacocks and teardrops; at first glance they resemble museum-worthy Bengali quilt art. A few rooms have Shard views. The Thames Suite has a cracking view of the river; this is best at night, when the water sparkles frantically like a glitter ball.
Bathrooms have black marble sinks, Toto Japanese loos, heated floors and mother-of-pearl mirrors. Cubicle rain showers are perfectly luxurious, but only three rooms have bath tubs. The sweetly pungent 'Caribbean ginger' toiletries are made in India and good fun, but the bottles are rather small.
What to Do
Blytonesque British boys’ school meets Bombay palace bedecked in brilliant blue. The old classrooms of this erstwhile Victorian grammar school now have beds swaddled in Indian fabrics and boastful views of the Shard. Sip on a turmeric-dusted cocktail in the bar or enjoy a naan-with-wine pairing in the restaurant.
The Food of Love
The most glorious room is the Baluchi restaurant, which is in the former assembly hall: the walls are doused in royal blue paint; Hyderabad-style chandeliers made from sapphire-tinted glass hang from the vaulted roof. There’s a warmness to the sense of history here: original stone fireplaces are stuffed with blazing displays of red anthuriums; mullioned windows and wood-clad walls make for an atmosphere that’s intimate rather than imperious. One can still imagine the squeak of plimsolls and the scrape of desks across the painstakingly restored wooden floors
The LaLiT London’s Baluchi at the Great Hall is not limited to authentic Indian delicacies. Its gallery offers a unique take on afternoon tea. It is an ideal spot to have some traditional English tea snacks with an interesting Indian twist. For the pleasure of al fresco, there’s a 32-cover beautifully designed terrace.
