Love at First Sight
The castle was originally built between 1841 and 1843 by Captain Rice Davies Powell, a retired officer of the Indian Army who chose neo-Gothic architecture to complement the dramatic limestone hills overlooking the River Taw.
In 1878, the world-famous opera singer Adelina Patti purchased the castle and surrounding land for £3,500. She fell in love with its romantic setting and dreamed of making it her private retreat.
Patti built a clock tower and created the stunning Adelina Patti Theatre, inspired by La Scala and Drury Lane (opened in July 1891).
She constructed a conservatory and winter garden which after her death in 1919 was donated to the city of Swansea, where it became known as the Patti Pavilion.
The castle was among the first private residences in Wales (possibly the UK) to have electricity, powered by an Otto engine installed before Nicolini’s death in 1898.
Patti also funded a private railway station near the property, complete with a lavish waiting room and her own private carriage, ensuring she could travel in style throughout the UK.
Under Patti’s care, Craig-y-Nos became a celebrated hub for the elite, hosting royalty & ambassadors. She sang privately for Queen Victories for 40 years.
Although the building was originally known as Craig-y-Nos House, Patti's close connections to royalty and her international fame as one of the greatest opera singers of her time gave her unique privileges. With Queen Victoria's approval, the grand Gothic-style mansion became known as Craig-y-Nos Castle — "Rock of the Night" in Welsh.
Adelina Patti, one of the greatest opera singers of the 19th century, made history not only on stage but also in technology. She was the first opera singer in the UK to record her voice, helping to launch the British music recording industry.
At the time, many opera singers refused to record, fearing that capturing their voice would lessen their fame or expose vocal flaws. Patti defied this thinking. Confident in her artistry—even in her later years—she allowed early gramophone engineers to record her at her home, Craig-y-Nos Castle, using primitive equipment that carved sound into wax discs.
These recordings, made around 1905, were groundbreaking. Despite her age and the limitations of the technology, her voice still shone through. Patti proved that music could be preserved and shared beyond the concert hall, opening the door for generations of recording artists.
Her brave step into the unknown helped pioneer the UK’s recorded music industry and left a lasting cultural legacy—her voice, once only heard by royalty and opera lovers, could now be heard by anyone.

With a voice that captivated kings and queens, the American presidents, the Russian tsar and European royalties, Adelina could have lived anywhere. But it was in this quiet corner of Wales that she chose to build her sanctuary and to share it with the love of her life.
Adelina met Ernesto Nicolini, a fellow opera singer, while still married. Their deep connection, both artistic and romantic, grew over time. Refusing to hide their bond, Adelina took the extraordinary step of seeking a papal annulment from the Pope, a rare and bold act at the time, so she could marry Nicolini in the eyes of both society and her faith.
Together, they turned Craig y Nos into a place of warmth and grandeur. She built a lavish private theatre to rival any stage in Europe, filled the castle with music, and entertained friends from around the world. The gardens bloomed under their care, and their love echoed in every stone.
Today, Craig y Nos Castle still breathes that romance. Couples from all over the world come to wed beneath the very same roof where Adelina and Nicolini lived their love story. From the majestic Adelina Patti Theatre to the sunlit Conservatory and starlit gardens, the castle offers a backdrop as poetic as the diva’s own life.

Your Stay
Castle offers bed and breakfast accommodation in en-suite rooms Fridays and Saturdays at £150 for two sharing an en-suite.
At weekends only we will offer breakfast.
On weekdays we offer room only at a reduced rate @99 for two in an en-suite. Guests can have breakfast at the Craig y Nos Country Park cafe. The cafe serves breakfast all day @ £12 per person. The cafe also serves lunches until 4pm.
We are a dog friendly castle, so you furry companions stay free. Dogs and their owners access to off-lead meadow walks and riverside runs. They’re welcome in the Patti Bar and Nicolini Lounge too, and treated like members of the family.
There are beautiful views of the surrounding Beacons National Park and extensive walks in the Craig y Nos Country Park, ideal for dog walkers, couple and families as you can walk out of the castle straight into the country park without taking the car.
The castle is a wedding venue hosting 100 weddings a year at weekends. You can dry hire our venue and self-cater your event or book one of our wedding packages.

Historic and Ghost Tours: - Guided history tours take you through the castle’s music-filled past, including Adelina Patti’s private theatre. Guests can join for free. Organised history tours are @10 per person. - Or join the castle’s famous ghost tours and overnight paranormal experiences.

Henry Vaughan Walk: - A 3,5 km (approx 1 hr 15 min) scenic route inspired by the 17th-century poet (“the Swan of the Usk”) Bannau Brycheiniog.
Beacons Way: - A challenging one-way hike to Llyn y Fan Fawr (the highest lake in south Wales), with awe-inspiring views across the Beacons. Full day (~16 km, 5 hours) route from the castle.
National Showcaves Centre for Wales (Dan‑yr‑Ogof Caves): - Just 500 yards from the castle. Explore dramatic limestone caves, a dinosaur park, Shire horses, and indoor play—perfect weather-proof family outing.
Brecon Beacons Mountain Centre (Libanus Visitor Centre): - About 8 km south of Brecon. Offers free access, a café, interactive maps, guided walks, and spectacular views of Pen y Fan and Corn Du.
Brecon Mountain Railway: - Historic narrow-gauge steam train from Pant station, winding past reservoirs and through beautiful parkland. A relaxing ride for all the family (dogs often welcome).
